Program Background

Superior teaching is the primary mission of Jacksonville State University. This necessitates the appointment of distinguished teacher-scholars to endowed chairs and professorships. Such scholars will provide academic enrichment by augmenting an already strong faculty, bringing fresh ideas and timely research to the University, and enlarging the catalog of information and resources. As each of our programs strive to maintain and attain formal accreditation, the need for more doctoral qualified faculty becomes a critical requirement.

To retain and attract the most qualified instructors, Endowed Chairs and Professorships are crucial to the expansion of services. For example, an endowed chair in community health nursing is proposed to provide a unique focus and expert resource in evidence-based practice in community nursing. The individual selected for this position will be expected to coordinate a comprehensive research program to provide opportunities for collaborative research teams comprised of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. In addition to supplementing salary, an endowment would provide a research/technology fund for the chair. Another proposal is that of an Endowed Chair for the College of Education and Professional Studies in the area of Teacher Education. This position would provide a model for excellence in effective teaching, scholarship, and service for faculty employed in the College of Education and Professional Studies.
