Every outstanding university has an excellent infrastructure of data and resources through its library. Jacksonville State University will augment the holdings and technology of its Houston Cole Library each year to maintain and advance the educational goals of the University. A $250,000 endowment will generate approximately $12,500 each year toward this endeavor.
The Capital Campaign will help Houston Cole Library meet three important goals: (1) Support the New Technical Information Center at McClellan (2) Enhance the Collections of the University Library and; (2) Endow a Professorship for the University Librarian. The Library will need to develop and support the Technical Information Center at McClellan. Support currently comes from the existing collections and staff of Houston Cole Library. The Library hopes to develop a unique McClellan collection and staff the Technical Information Center with support from the Capital Campaign.
The Library also hopes to endow its collection development fund, which currently is supported solely with University E&G funds. The most recent accreditation visit in 2003 cited the Library for not supporting graduate programs at the level required. A general collection endowment would permit Library purchases of important books, journals, and electronic databases that are unobtainable under the present materials budget.
Finally, Houston Cole Library must hire and retain the best-qualified personnel in order to maintain its overall quality. An endowed professorship would enhance the position of University Librarian and make it attractive to the best candidates when the incumbent retires in the near future.
An endowment of $250,000 will fund approximately $37,500 to divide among the three initiatives.
